In old stories, mythology, and present day media, for example, scholarly fiction, an apparition (now and again known as a ghost [British English] or apparition [American English], ghost, phantom, soul, spook, or frequent) is the spirit or soul of a dead individual or creature that can show up, in unmistakable structure or other indication, to the living.

Portrayals of the spirit of phantoms fluctuate broadly from an imperceptible vicinity to translucent or scarcely noticeable wispy shapes, to reasonable, exact dreams. The intentional endeavor to contact the soul of a perished individual is known as magic, or in spiritism as a séance.
